Email and Spyware Safety Tips
Today, Email and the Internet has become as vital to the modern office as phones and filing cabinets. However, the Internet is not the gentle place it used to be. Today, we have spammers flooding us with advertisements, viruses trying to invade our home and office computers, and spyware programs that bombard us with popup ads and slow our computers to a crawl. We would like to share with all county employees, what steps we have taken to protect employees, and what you can do to help.
Our email system has the ability to catch any virus attached to an email that is sent to, or sent from any county employee through the county email server. You have probably already seen some of the alerts the system sends out...
However, listed below are other ways that it may still be possible to get a virus or allow spyware onto your PC...
- Accounts that you access through the browser, like hotmail, aol, juno...
- Forwarding chain letters.
- Opening unknown attachments.
- Downloading & installing software off the internet like, gator, weatherbug, screensavers, hotbars... ( besides viruses, these programs often spy on your internet activity and slow your computer...)
- Sharing files or software from or with others.
- Using any file sharing software, like kazaa, morpheus, napster...
- Instant messaging can under the right conditions, allow a virus or worse to be put on your computer.
- Not having anti-virus software or turning it off.
- Clicking on popup advertisements… ( especially if they look like warnings from your computer )
The Internet, like the world around us, is a huge place full of information, news, help and fun. But, just like in the real world, it pays to look both ways when crossing the street. With these few hints, You should be able to "surf the net" more safely.
